At Toolern Vale & District Primary School, all students participate in our Italian language program, taught by a specialist teacher. Each class takes part in a one-hour lesson each week.
Students develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing through games, songs, role play, stories and collaborative activities. They learn to use simple words, phrases and sentences, building confidence in communicating in Italian.
Learning another language helps students develop respect for different cultures and strengthens their understanding of Australia’s diverse community. It also supports their English language development by building awareness of how language works.
Students learn to:
Use greetings and simple conversations
Follow basic instructions
Read and write familiar words and sentences
Recognise sounds and patterns in Italian
Explore Italian culture, landmarks and traditions
Our program connects with Literacy, Numeracy and the Arts, while also building students’ understanding of Italian culture, traditions and ways of life. Students are encouraged to practise their Italian beyond the classroom, in their learning spaces, the playground and at home, helping them use the language in meaningful, everyday situations.
