All Victorian government schools have a School Council that plays an important role in supporting and guiding the school. School councils are legally established bodies that work in partnership with the principal to help shape the strategic direction of the school within Department of Education guidelines. Through this work, the council contributes to the ongoing improvement of student learning and wellbeing.
Parent participation on the School Council is highly valued. Parents bring diverse skills, experiences and perspectives that help ensure the school continues to reflect the needs and aspirations of its community. Being involved in the School Council is also a wonderful way to strengthen connections with the school and contribute positively to your child’s educational journey.
School Council elections are held each year during Term 1. If the number of nominations exceeds the number of vacancies, a ballot process is conducted.
There are several ways parents can become involved, including:
nominating themselves for School Council
encouraging another parent to nominate
participating in the election process by voting
No special qualifications or experience are needed to become a School Council member. A genuine interest in supporting the school, contributing ideas and working collaboratively with others is what matters most.
At Toolern Vale and District Primary School, School Council meetings are currently held on Mondays, with eight meetings scheduled throughout the year.
